Capitol Boulevard Tunnel

Capitol Boulevard Tunnel

Location: Boise. Under Capitol Boulevard on either side of the Boise River at Boise State University and Julia Davis Park.

History: There are two pedestrian/bicycle tunnels channeling greenbelt users under busy Capitol Boulevard. The older of the two on the south side of the river is a part of the original greenbelt, and is not truly a tunnel. It is an open, wooden plank pathway under southernmost arch of the four-arch Capitol Boulevard Bridge. The second structure is a true tunnel that connects the greenbelt pathways on the north side of the river. It is an enclosed square concrete tunnel.

Interesting points: The bridge is an Oregon Trail memorial built in 1931. It is near the spot the McClelland ferry crossed the river in 1864, carrying pioneers and settlers along the Oregon Trail. The bridge was dedicated as a memorial to Charles W. Wayland, (1873-1953), a pioneer architect, who presented a plan to beautify Capitol Boulevard to the city. Historic lighting was installed in 1989.
