Thomas Cahill

The author of eight books, Thomas Cahill is the former director of religious publishing at Doubleday and has taught at several universities.

He is most well known for his series, The Hinges of History, which chronicles important transitional moments in western civilization.

Cahill, who understands Greek, Latin, French, Italian and Hebrew, is currently working on the fifth book in that series, which already includes:

  • How the Irish Saved Civilization: The Untold Story of Ireland's Heroic Role from the Fall of Rome to the Rise of Medieval Europe
  • The Gifts of the Jews: How a Tribe of Desert Nomads Changed the Way Everyone Thinks and Feels
  • Desire of the Everlasting Hills: The World Before and After Jesus
  • Sailing the Wine-Dark Sea: Why the Greeks Matter

Franklin and Cahill talked about the series, as well as the "gift givers" — the people who shaped Western civilization — who Cahill discovered while working on his books.
