Robert MacNeil

Robert MacNeil, a Canadian journalist who worked for Reuters, NBC and the BBC, spent the last 20 years of his career at PBS.

Highly regarded the co-founder, with Jim Lehrer, of the PBS nightly newscast, the "MacNeil-Lehrer Newshour," MacNeil is also a novelist (Burden of Desire, The Voyage), playwright and memoirist (Wordstruck, Looking for My Country).

A longtime student of the English language, his books Do You Speak American? and The Story of English (co-authored by Robert McCrum and William Cran) were also PBS series by the same names.

Host Marcia Franklin talks with MacNeil, who became an American citizen in 1997, about how September 11 affected him, about how the news profession has changed, and about his love for the English language.
