Mabel Jankovsky-Jones Biography Mabel works as wetland ecologist for the Idaho Department of Fish and Game’s Conservation Data Center. Her work takes her to wetlands throughout Idaho to conduct surveys of wetland vegetation and to search for rare wetland plant species. A love of wetlands came from growing up on a ranch in southeastern Wyoming. The end of the long Wyoming winter was marked by spring flooding of a large meadow just across the stream from her childhood home. Countless hours were spent as a youngster catching leopard and chorus frogs, playing in the creek, and having “cattail fights” with siblings. When tall enough to reach the pedals on a tractor, Mabel operated the mower and rake that were used to harvest the native hay in this and other meadows on the ranch. Mabel worked as
a teacher for several years in Wyoming. A summer of collecting alpine
flora in Wyoming convinced her to continue taking additional botany
coursework. She went on to receive a masters degree plant geography
at the University of Wyoming. |
