Dr.
Virginia (Ginna) Gillerman has been an economic geologist for the
Idaho Geological Survey (IGS) since June 1989. Established in 1919,
the IGS is the lead agency for collecting, interpreting, and disseminating
scientific information on the geology and mineral resources of Idaho.
She staffs their 1-person branch office in Boise. The office is located
in the Geosciences Department at Boise State University.
Ginna
attended Carleton College in Minnesota and later received her Ph.D.
in economic geology at the University of California, Berkeley. She
worked as an exploration geologist for eight years, principally with
Anaconda Minerals Company in Nevada, Utah, and Alaska, but also for
Amax, Kennecott, Freeport, and Noranda Exploration, mostly in the
Basin and Range. Dr. Gillerman counts gold deposits, skarns, base
metal replacement deposits, petrology, structural geology, and detailed
mapping as her specialties within a wide range of geologic experience.
As a geologist with the Idaho Geological Survey, Ginna provides information
to the public and government agencies on a wide diversity of geologic
issues affecting southern Idaho. She monitors and reports on mining
and exploration activity in Idaho and occasionally teaches an @Ore
Deposits@ class at Boise State University. With the IGS, she has also
worked on a number of field-oriented projects, including geologic
mapping of Jerome County, hazard inventories of historic and inactive
mine sites, landslide evaluations, and educational programs.
