John
Owens Biography
My
name is John Owens, and I am the new (started July 2) Fire Education
Specialist for the Bureau of Land Management at the National Interagency
Fire Center. My background includes time as a wildland firefighter,
teacher and public information person. I have worked with many natural
resource agencies, including the Boise National Forest in the late 70's.
My fire experience includes time on a hot shot crew and engine crew
on the Cleveland National Forest in southern California, and as fire
crew leader on the Umatilla National Forest in eastern Oregon. Most
recently I was the public information person for the Public Works Department
in the City of Springfield, Oregon (6 years). Between the Forest Service
and the City, I was a math/science teacher for 10 years.
My
formal education includes a B.S. from the University of Idaho in wildlife/fisheries;
a B.A. Ed. in science education from Central Washington, and an M.S.
from the University of Oregon, also in education.
