John Owens Biography

My name is John Owens, and I am the new (started July 2) Fire Education Specialist for the Bureau of Land Management at the National Interagency Fire Center. My background includes time as a wildland firefighter, teacher and public information person. I have worked with many natural resource agencies, including the Boise National Forest in the late 70's. My fire experience includes time on a hot shot crew and engine crew on the Cleveland National Forest in southern California, and as fire crew leader on the Umatilla National Forest in eastern Oregon. Most recently I was the public information person for the Public Works Department in the City of Springfield, Oregon (6 years). Between the Forest Service and the City, I was a math/science teacher for 10 years.

My formal education includes a B.S. from the University of Idaho in wildlife/fisheries; a B.A. Ed. in science education from Central Washington, and an M.S. from the University of Oregon, also in education.
