Greg Kaltenecker was born in Hawaii, and lived all over the world as a child. His family moved to Idaho when he was a teenager, and he graduated from Capital High School in 1982. Greg was always interested in the outdoors, and loved to fish, hunt, hike, camp, and catch snakes as a boy. He followed these instincts in college, graduating with a BS in Biology and an MS in Raptor Biology from Boise State University.
Greg has always been fascinated with the migration of fish and animals, especially birds. He started the Idaho Bird Observatory, a program at Boise State University which studies bird migration. Because of his job as Director of the Bird Observatory, Greg coordinates several projects designed to help scientists learn about bird migration in the western U.S., and he and his assistants band thousands of birds each year. In addition, Greg teaches people, both kids and adults alike, about birds, migration, and conservation. Turning kids on to birds and wildlife is the most rewarding thing about Greg’s job, and he never misses an opportunity to show people what he does.
Greg’s wife Deniz is also a biologist and teacher, and their newborn daughter Ayla will probably know a few things about birds when she grows up.
