Rex Sallabanks was born and raised in England, and despite living in the western U.S. for almost 20 years, strives to maintain his English roots! He joined England’s Young Ornithologists’ Club at age eight and has been watching and working with birds ever since.
After receiving his Bachelor’s degree in Ecology and Conservation Biology at the University of Plymouth in 1987, he accepted a scholarship to study birds at the University of Oregon (Go Ducks!) for his doctoral degree. In 1992, Rex moved to Raleigh, North Carolina to work as a Research Associate at North Carolina State University. In 1994 he migrated to Boise where he directed the Idaho Office of the Sustainable Ecosystems Institute for almost a decade. During this time, Rex developed a research program focused on understanding the effects of things like fire and logging on songbirds.
Now, Rex coordinates the Nongame Bird Program for Idaho Fish and Game. He is also involved in many other bird groups such as Partners in Flight. Most of Rex’s activities revolve around implementing “all-bird” conservation through bird monitoring, conservation planning, and restoration of important bird habitats statewide. He is also a member of the faculty in the Biology Department at Boise State University where he advises graduate students.
When not working, Rex enjoys spending time with his wife, Sydney, and their 11-year old daughter Chloe, cycling, camping, and “twitching” rare birds in his native England.
