Idaho Public Television earned a Northwest Regional Emmy Award, which was announced Saturday (June 7) by the Northwest Chapter of The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences in Seattle. IdahoPTV General Manager Peter W. Morrill also was honored during the ceremony with a Silver Circle Award.
D4K, the IdahoPTV science call-in series for elementary students, competed in the Children/Youth (12 and Under) — Program/Special category. Joan Cartan-Hansen is host and producer of the series, which is in its ninth season. Sue Nass is contributing editor and Al Hagenlock is director/videographer. This is the third Regional Emmy Award the series and its Web site have earned.
“I’m constantly amazed at the talents of our creative team at Idaho Public Television,” says General Manager Morrill. “We can stand tall with pride in how our programming compares in quality and impact to our colleagues throughout the Northwest.”
Morrill accepted a Silver Circle Award from the academy. The award honors media professionals who began their television career more than 25 years ago and have made a significant contribution to Northwest Chapter television. Morrill is the third Idahoan to receive the award since its inauguration in 1991.
“For a person who started off creating television programs, and who still considers it to be the reason he still goes to work, I’m deeply honored,” Morrill told the Seattle audience. He also said that good television is about storytelling, and that the future holds new opportunities to do that. “Cheaper, high-quality equipment, Web and new media distribution avenues — all were unimagined even a decade ago,” Morrill said. “They give us new ways to tell the important stories that need to be told to our viewers and users across the street — and around the world.”
Under his stewardship, IdahoPTV creates national award-winning television productions, leads the region in technical achievement, and maintains a commitment to provide Idahoans with outstanding broadcasting services. His career began in television production and extends now to a seat on the national board for PBS. He also serves on the board of the University of Idaho School of Journalism and Mass Media.
The Northwest Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences sponsors the regional awards for local and regional program material created by television stations in Idaho, Oregon, Washington, Montana and Alaska.
IdahoPTV is Idaho’s only statewide medium, and offers national and Idaho-produced programming from 10 transmitters and 37 translators.
