BETWEEN THE LIONS INCREASES READING PERFORMANCE

Set in an imaginary library run by a family of lions, BETWEEN THE LIONS offers an innovative mix of puppetry and animation, and combines the best of phonics and whole language to help encourage young beginning readers. A recently released University of Kansas study finds significant growth in reading skills for kindergarten and first grade students, after having viewed BETWEEN THE LIONS.

The research findings indicate the show helped kindergartners understand conventions such as reading left to right, from top to bottom and improved their sound and word recognition skills. On a test that measures children's knowledge of word sounds, kindergartners who were tested before and after watching the show saw their scores rise by 64% _ compared to only 25% gains for similar children who did not watch the show. These and similar skills are highly predictive of children_s later ability to read.

The companion Web site (pbskids.org/lions) has excellent literacy-based activities for you and your young viewer to do together.
