Jake Smith asked his mother if he could go outside.

Jake was eight years old. He had blonde hair that stood up on his head and blue eyes.

Jake packed a backpack and off he went. He found little footprints in the dirt. He followed them into the forest near his house.

His grandpa told stories about this forest that Jake loved.
