Many visitors to the Lochsa country think that Lochsa Lodge is an oasis in the middle of a forest desert. Built by Andrew Erickson, after the primative road reached Powell in 1926, it serves the needs of forest visitors to the trails, lakes, rivers, and public campgrounds of the Lochsa country.

The author spent his early childhood summers and one snowy winter at this lodge, which was owned by his family in the 1940s and 1950s. The photo is looking at the front of the lodge after Andrew built the main lodge building but before any of the trees were removed or the cabins were built.
