Primary Sources: Workshops In American History  "Common Sense and the American Revolution: The Power of the Printed Word"  This workshop explores the power and importance of America's first "best-seller." Using the language of ordinary people, Thomas Paine's Common Sense called for revolution, challenging many assumptions about government and the colonies' relationship with England. This workshop contrasts the declarations of local communities with Common Sense to see how support for American independence rose up in the colonies. [G]

Growing Old in a New Age  "Dying, Death, and Bereavement"  Discusses the services older people need to deal with dying and death. Elders describe their views on widowhood and management of grief. [P]

Arts In Every Classroom, The: A Video Library, K-5  "Collaborating with a Cultural Resource"  A fourth–grade teacher and a museum educator in New Orleans collaborate to develop a unit of study with ties to language arts, social studies, and visual art. Students explore the work of a well–known artist, visit an exhibition of his work, meet for a drawing lesson alongside the Mississippi River, and create poems and pictures that they proudly display to their parents. [P]

Arts In Every Classroom, The: A Video Library, K-5  "Bringing Artists to Your Community"  Successful collaborations between classroom teachers and artists who come for a residency enrich the curriculum of this rural school in Idalia, Colorado. A visiting actor brings story–telling and vocabulary to life for kindergarten and fourth–grade students and their teachers, while a musician engages first– and third–grade students in writing songs that relate to subjects they are studying. [P]

Game Changers The program tells of a pilot program in to identify high-ability people in STEM fields (science, technology, engineering and math), fund their training at four universities and create new teacher-preparation programs that focus on the skills and knowledge needed in the Information Age. Follow the individuals who received a $30,000 stipend, completed the newly created master's degree program, then worked in Indiana's high-need rural and urban schools. [G]
