RESEARCH INQUIRIES - VOLCANO

Locate a web site that displays a map showing where volcanoes occur in the world. One team member will draw these areas on your overhead transparency. Generalizing a pattern is okay. We will later compare these volcano locations with earthquakes and tectonic plate boundaries.

Web sites:
http://www.volcano.si.edu/world/find_regions.cfm . This is a nice map of volcanoes world-wide

http://www.thirteen.org/savageearth/volcanoes/index.html provides more information.

http://pubs.usgs.gov/gip/volc/nature.html, yet still more information about the crust

http://vulcan.wr.usgs.gov/Glossary/P1ateTectonics/Maps/map_plate_tectonics_world.htm
this is a map showing both volcanoes and plate tectonics

Define these terms:

Ring of Fire

Magma

Caldera

What is the difference between magma and lava?

Why are volcanoes often located along subduction zones?

Be prepared to discuss why volcanoes are located along plate lines using the above terms and information. You will present this information to your COLOR GROUP.
