Clearwater River
It is a river born among the wild expanses of the Bitterroot Mountains.
Melting snows become icy, clear streams… rushing through untrammeled forests…
to their inevitable rendezvous with the Clearwater River.
The Clearwater also flows deep with history. This river transported Lewis and Clark, delivered gold rush prospectors, and witnessed huge log drives. But long before those
days, the Clearwater carried generations of steelhead and salmon on their incredible journey to the ocean…and back. And the Clearwater steelhead are some of the biggest you'll find anywhere.
Mitch Sanchotena-Idaho fishing expert
"The Clearwater river is unique because it produces one of the largest strains of steelhead anywhere. It's called a b-run steelhead. Steelhead enthusiasts come from all over the world to fish steelhead on the Clearwater."
Those steelhead are one of the reasons Pat Long became a fishing guide. Pat, a life long resident of the Lewiston area, has spent countless hours guiding anglers on the Clearwater. In fact, he spends as many as 200 days a year on the water.
While the b-run steelhead are his favorite pursuit, he and his guests have also been treated to several good salmon fishing seasons in recent years. And whether he's after salmon or steelhead, when Pats on the Clearwater there's always a great chance that before long there'll be a fish in the boat.
Pat Long-Fishing guide
"My philosophy about fishing is fish every chance you can get. Just get on the water and fish. I get a day off I go fishing and if I don't want to go fishing my wife says honey lets go fishing"
