"That was not only an adventure, it was one of the best experiences of my life," says CCC veteran Fred Gibson. Gibson joined the CCC’s in 1935 and helped build the Manning Bridge over the Salmon River near Riggins. Gibson isn’t the only one with fond memories of the CCC. Doug Eier says if it hadn’t been for the CCC, he "probably would have ended up in Joliet Prison" a few miles from his home in Chicago. "I was just drifting, a high school dropout with nothing to do," he says. "The CCC gave this guy, and many others I’m sure, a chance to really make something of themselves."
