HERB VAN KIRK INTERVIEW - BUILDING FISH HOOK TUNNEL

They had a platform rig on there with jackhammers and the drills and they would get any driver available to back it up. It had 12 speeds forward and 5 reverse and they were never used. It was always the first gear. And we would back in, they would drill. They would fill it up with dynamite, pull the truck out, way out of the way. And blow it up and then go back, clean the debris out and go back and get another truck. As I understand it, I think they accomplished, I think, about 8 feet a day. Something like that. But it took probably a good year and a half, a long time.
