HERB VAN KIRK INTERVIEW - DISASTER STRIKES FISH HOOK TUNNEL

I looked out and they said "Fire in the hole" three times and they fired. And I saw this coat go through the air and I said "Somebody’s coat went down into Fishhook Creek." So I ran down there. And there’s a man in there. A nice young man. Joe Quinn from upper New York State. And we got him in the rack body truck and I cradled him in my arm. And we got down to Avery and they stopped the train to take him into St. Maries’ hospital. And I knew his brain was working because he says "What you doing here, Herb?" I said "We’re going for a little ride." And then he'd go off into a blackout, I guess. And he was just full of stones, like shrapnel from the war. I don't why he had to be there. He was just like a man being shot out of cannon. And a long distance, too.
