CCC MEALS
It was Fred Blood’s job to see that the CCC boys at Heyburn State Park were well fed. It was challenging finding recipes to feed 200 hungry young men. If the food was good, the cook was a hero. If the food was bad, he was on everyone’s list. "I’d bank our food against any of them," Blood says. "It was a balanced menu each time. We ate quite a few beans and, of course, meat and bacon and sausage. We had steaks once a week. On Sunday, we’d have chicken or a special roast," he says. It was far better food than the boys got at home. Before joining the CCC, most "were lucky to have potatoes," Blood says. "A lot of boys came in pretty hungry, pretty thin. And, in the first month to six weeks, they’d gain 10, 11 pounds," he says.
"The meals were ideal," recalls Joe Bradish. "Every meal in the C’s there was a dessert, a pike, a cake, oranges, something like that, which was something special," he says.
