The Heart of Idaho
Pond at Idaho Rocky Mountain Ranch
Producer Marcia Franklin explores one of her favorite places in Idaho--the area around the Sawtooth Mountains. Sometimes known as "The Heart of Idaho," because of their central location and grandeur, the Sawtooths provide a stunning backdrop for some of the most enjoyable activities in the Gem State.
The hub of the Sawtooth Valley is the hamlet of Stanley, population 91. And a good jumping off point for your fun is the historic Rocky Mountain Ranch, where Marcia spent two days. From there, she went kayaking on the Salmon River, mountain biked, took a boat across Redfish Lake, attempted to learn how to fly fish, and visited the Sawtooth Fish Hatchery.
Marcia rounded out her trip with a visit to the White Cloud Mountain Inn, a bed and breakfast owned by legendary Idaho singer Muzzie Braun and his wife JoAnn. The Inn, which operates on solar power, is nestled in the White Cloud mountains about 30 miles from Stanley. It provides solace and wonderful breakfasts, and if you're in luck, a song from Muzzie. It's a perfect way to relax in one of America's most special spots.
