Behind the Scenes

What does it take
to produce an "Outdoor Idaho" episode?
Good
question. Each show needs a producer, the one who comes up with the idea, contacts the
people to be interviewed, logs the tapes, and writes the script.
Each show needs a videographer, the one who actually brings back the pictures, who lugs the camera gear, who makes sure the batteries are working, and who has at least a touch of artistry. Oh, and because we don't have a big budget, the videographer needs to bring back great audio, too.
And each show needs an editor, the one who combines voice overs, interviews, music, natural sound, and scenics to create the actual program on video tape. Often, the videographer and the editor are the same person. Until 1998 the editor used a linear editing machine. Now we use a non-linear computer. It's the difference between a typewriter and a word processor.
In other words, a program has all kinds of opportunities to succeed... or fail...from its inception to its conclusion!

John Crancer is the lead producer for "Outdoor Idaho." The other producers work with John to make sure their story ideas will work into the overall schedule. Usually, we know our show schedule about fifteen months out. Two of John's recent shows are "Idaho, An Angler's Paradise" and "Owyhee Canyonlands."
Pat Metzler is the chief director of the show. He also does much of the shooting and editing. Pat prefers to work behind the scenes, but his touch is evident throughout the show, starting with our new "open" for the Twentieth Anniversary show. Two of Pat's recent shows are "Idaho, An Angler's Paradise" and "Gold Rush Days and Ghost Towns."
Bruce Reichert is the host of "Outdoor Idaho." It's his voice you hear on each show. He's also the senior writer/producer, which only means he's been around the longest! Two of Bruce's recent shows are "Fish & Game in the Crosshairs" and "The River of No Return."

Marcia Franklin and Joan Cartan-Hansen and Jim Peck are also writer/producers. While "Outdoor Idaho" isn't their primary assignment, they each contribute at least one or two strong shows a year for the cause. Marcia's latest show is "Desert Therapy." Joan's latest show is "Frank Church Wilderness." Jim's latest show is "Teton Inspiration."
Alan Austin is a videographer/editor for the show. Alan is also a musician, which has come in handy on several of our productions, most notably "Oldtime Fiddlers." Alan's most recent show is "Teton Inspiration."
Ricardo Ochoa, the only original crew member of "Outdoor Idaho," is also a videographer/editor. His most recent show was "Fish & Game in the Crosshairs."
Morgan Dethman is our broadcast graphic designer, and Rick Penticoff and Stephanie Dickey create the various Web sites for our shows. Over the years, Anne Peterson, Sandy Streiff, Mike Lafferty, and Jessi Bodily have all worked on publicity for the show.
