When North Carolina ceded its western land to the U.S. government, some of the citizens of the territory began their own government, calling it the State of Franklin. North Carolina rescinded the cession but the State of Franklin continued to struggle for four chaotic years, ending in violence and a failed bid to become the country's 14th state. Scholarly interviews and re-enactments tell the story that is filmed in eastern Tennessee. G
