In 1957 mezzo-soprano Barbara Smith Conrad, today a successful international performer and vocal teacher, finds herself at the epicenter of racial controversy. A member of the first racially integrated undergraduate class at the University of Texas, she is cast in a student opera as the romantic lead opposite a white male student, which sends shock waves through the Texas Legislature.
