In Search of the Novel  "Why Do I Have to Read This Book?"  The workshop's 10 novels are examined to see why they appear on recommended reading lists and why they have earned numerous awards. The program looks at the essential elements of good writing and storytelling and explores positive reasons for reading. It also examines ways in which novels are challenged by students and communities. D

Social Studies In Action: A Teaching Practices Library, K-12  "Introduction to the Video Library"  This program presents the purpose of the Social Studies in Action video library. It introduces all the components of the library, explains the goals of NCSS, and presents examples of classroom lessons throughout the library. This program also addresses a variety of ways in which the library can be used for enhancing the curriculum, teacher reflection, and best practices for teaching. D

Social Studies In Action: A Teaching Practices Library, K-12  "Historical Change"  David Kitts is a first–grade teacher on the Santo Domingo Indian Reservation in New Mexico. In his bilingual classroom, Native American students are studying the history of farming through a lesson that compares farming in eighteenth–century New England to current– day practices in the Midwest. The lesson uses literature and the study of various farming tools and products to illuminate the changes that have taken place in the industry over time and in different parts of the country. D

This episode features four craft ideas that make great gifts - but you might just want to keep them for yourself! First is a stylish belt from recycled materials. Then, make a pin cushion for your favorite sewer - maybe mom? Next, it's a coffee cozy for hot beverages - maybe for dad? And finally, a handmade tree vase for just about anyone who loves the outdoors. D

Travel with Kids  "Ireland - Tracing Ancestry in the Northwest"  In Ireland's northwest region, The family discovers their roots and hunts for the ancient castle of their ancestor, infamous Grace O'Malley, the Pirate Queen. After searching the wilds of the Connemara where they encounter a true Irish traffic jam - sheep in the road - our host family finds refuge at a farmhouse Bed and Breakfast, ironically enough owned by the O'Malley family. In their ancestry search, the family discovers the true meaning of heritage as they learn about the potato famine, sit in on a traditional music session and finally reach Clare Island and the home of Grace O'Malley. D
