Making Meaning In Literature: A Workshop for Teachers, Grades 6-8  "Workshop 2. Encouraging Discussion"  Introduced by Dr. Langer, this program concentrates on discussion and its importance in helping engaged readers go further in the text. The on–screen teachers talk about ways to encourage whole–class and small–group discussion, the importance of asking the right questions to provoke thoughtful discussion, and making the discussion inclusive, including both talkative and reticent students. Their discussion is punctuated by visits to their classrooms, where discussion flourishes. D

Learning Math: Patterns, Functions & Algebra  "Functions and Algorithms"  Investigate algorithms and functions. Topics covered include the importance of doing and undoing in mathematics, determining when a process can or cannot be undone, using function machines to picture and undo algorithms, and the unique outputs produced by functions.G

Learning Math: Patterns, Functions & Algebra  "Proportional Reasoning"  Look at direct variation and proportional reasoning. This investigation will help you to differentiate between relative and absolute meanings of "more" and to compare ratios without using common denominator algorithms. Topics include differentiating between additive and multiplicative processes and their effects on scale and proportionality, and interpreting graphs that represent proportional relationships or direct variation.G

Science In Focus: Force and Motion  "On A Roll"  The force of gravity makes a ball roll when it is placed on an incline. In this workshop, first-grade students roll balls of different sizes, masses, and materials down ramps of varying heights, comparing their speeds. The students then experiment by replacing the ramp with a cardboard tube, and try to determine how the tube must be oriented to allow the ball to roll, much as it rolled down the ramp.G

Teaching Channel Presents  "Digital Citizens & Improving Practice"  In our first half hour, we'll see how students are becoming "Super Digital Citizens" as they learn how to use the Internet responsibly - then, we'll switch gears and too see new ways teachers are working to improve their practice. Looking at Learning....Again Part 2  "Children's Ways of Knowing"  With Dr. Herbert Ginsburg. Children know a good deal of informal mathematics before they enter school. Clinical interviews help teachers understand what children know. D
