Superheroes: A Never-Ending Battle  "Truth, Justice, and the American Way (1938-1958)"  During the Depression, the popularity of dozens of superhero characters opens the door for a new generation of artists and writers. World War II creates a patriotic fervor for star-spangled adventurers to represent the American spirit at war and on the home front, but in the 1950s, superheroes are caught in the fire of government scrutiny and regulation. When the thrilling "Adventures of Superman" is broadcast on the new medium of television, America's first and greatest superhero leads the entire comic book industry to renewed strength. D

POV  "56 Up"  This is the eighth film in a series that began 49 years ago by interviewing a diverse group of 7-year-old children in England, and then resuming the discussion every seven years. Now director Michael Apted finds they have mostly weathered the storms of middle age and are beginning to face the challenges of aging, illness and economic crisis as he meets with 13 of the original 14 subjects.G

Architect Michael Graves: A Grand Tour   Popularly known for the "whistling bird" Alessi teakettle, the architect transforms America's built environment in the 1980s with buildings that take a whimsical approach to classical forms. But in early 2003, a mysterious and potentially fatal illness leaves him partially paralyzed. His ordeal, which includes years of painful rehabilitation, opens a new chapter of Graves' career - designing hospital furniture and homes for wounded war veterans.G
