Into the Deep: America, Whaling & the World: American Experience
Filmmaker Ric Burns tells an epic tale of three centuries of American whaling and the unique relationship between the hunter and the hunted, which begins in earnest in 1690 among the Quakers on Nantucket Island. The film explores two events that anchor whaling in the American consciousness. The Essex is rammed and sunk off the coast of Peru in 1820 by a sperm whale as long as the ship itself. Only eight sailors survive. In 1840, Herman Melville ships out on a whaling vessel that meets another vessel near where the Essex sank. The son of an Essex survivor gives Melville a copy of his father's memoir, which inspires Moby Dick.G
