Filmmaker Dawn Porter

Dawn Porter

Marcia Franklin interviews film producer Dawn Porter, whose documentary, "Gideon's Army," airs on HBO on July 1, and is available on HBO Go and HBO on Demand. The program follows several public defenders in the south as they struggle not only to help their clients, but also to stay afloat financially and emotionally.

The two discuss why Porter, who is also an attorney, wanted to make the film, and what she learned about the public defender system 50 years after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in Gideon v. Wainwright that all Americans, regardless of their economic status, have a right to an attorney when accused of a crime.

Porter's next documentary, "Spies of Mississippi," is slated to air on PBS and is about the African-Americans who were recruited by whites to spy on members of the civil rights movement.
