'Caregiving' Highlights a Month of Healthcare Programs

In the U.S., more than 53 million family caregivers are unpaid, providing 34 billion hours of care annually, amounting to an estimated $67 billion in personal lost earnings. Caregiving, a new two-hour documentary airing June 24 on Idaho Public Television, examines the evolution of our system of care, the social dynamics shaping our approach today and tomorrow, the lives and relationships of caregivers with those in their care, and the economic pressures faced by caregivers. The documentary is one of six specials on caregiving that air in June. The lineup also includes Idaho's Caregiving Crisis, featuring local stories from Idaho Reports producer Ruth Brown.

Your Health: A Sacred Matter (June 2 & 9 at 10 PM)
The two-part Your Health: A Sacred Matter explores how religion, spirituality and health care interrelate. The program weaves together compelling individual stories from doctors, patients, nurses, chaplains and caregivers who speak to the benefits of incorporating a patient's spirituality as part of a whole-patient/whole-person model of care. 

Dementia and Living Well (June 11 at 10 PM)
Dementia and Living Well is an hourlong documentary that features people across the country from diverse backgrounds who are living well with a form of dementia. The film explores how patients are navigating their everyday lives while serving as change-makers in their communities. 

Living with Alzheimer's and Dementia (June 23 at 9 PM)
Living with Alzheimer's and Dementia explores the effects these diseases have on individuals, families and communities. The program reveals the myths and stigmas that have hindered better living and caretaking, and examines the heavy burden of costs associated with the disease.  

Caregiving (June 24 at 8 PM)
Presented by Executive Producer Bradley Cooper, this is the story of caregivers navigating the ups and downs of their work, revealing the state and the stakes of care in America today. Cooper discovered that most people, at some time, will become a caregiver to a loved one.  Caregiving looks at this urgent national issue through personal stories. Experts explain how critical it will be to give caregivers the security and support they provide others.

Alzheimer's: The Caregiver's Perspective (June 24 at 10 PM)
In Alzheimer's: The Caregiver's Perspective, caretakers share their diverse experiences of caring for loved ones in the world of dementia - from diagnosis to saying the long goodbye. A variety of caregivers, family members and many others explain how they creatively navigate the frustrations, sorrows, and complications of caring for a loved one who can no longer function safely on their own. 

Idaho Reports Special: Idaho's Caregiving Crisis (June 27 at 8:30 PM)
The Idaho Reports special Idaho's Caregiving Crisis includes updates on public policy issues in the Gem State that affect caregivers and the people who depend on them, including recent changes that affect Idahoans who care for their family members.
