Meet Some Idaho Working Dogs in 'Dogs With Jobs'

Dogs make our lives easier and fuller. From guarding to guiding, sledding to sniffing, our canine counterparts stay busy helping everyday Idahoans get work done. As much as dogs need us, we need them. Whether it’s due to their extraordinary sense of smell, their loyalty, or their instinctual drive to work, these creatures will stun you with their smarts in the latest Outdoor Idaho production, “Dogs With Jobs.”

Lead producer Lauren Melink says it was eye-opening to realize how much we rely on dogs. “I knew dogs were important, but I had no idea that without them it would be far more difficult to get work done. Even in the technologically advanced age that we’re in, we haven’t replaced dogs on the ranch or in search-and-rescue efforts. They’re invaluable. It’s incredible.”

In this episode of Outdoor Idaho, we travel across the state to highlight the many ways in which Idahoans are working their dogs. Along the way, we meet a few very special dogs with jobs to better understand the unique partnership shared between dogs and humans. Dogs With Jobs airs Thursday, May 22, at 8 PM and again Sunday, May 25, at 7 PM on Idaho Public Television. Stream it on the PBS app or online at video.idahoptv.org beginning May 22.
